Scarcity and the Problem 2 °A Narrator: A long time ago, before the arrival of Quetzalcoatl, the first inhabitants of Mesoamerica struggled to survive. They only ate roots and hunted animals. But they did not have corn, the sacred grain hidden behind the mountains. The ancient gods tried to break the mountains with their colossal strength, but they failed. Stage Directions: Actors play as Aztecs, looking hungry, tired, and weak. Others act as gods pushing against the mountains but collapsing, exhausted. Scene 2. The Wisdom of Quetzalcoatl 2°B Narrator: The Aztecs begged Quetzalcoatl for help. “I will bring corn to you,” said the wise god. Then Quetzalcoatl observed an ant carrying a single grain of corn from the mountains. Stage Directions: Quetzalcoatl (actor in costume) listens to the Aztecs.
